Marçal Pou Rossell

I am a PhD student at the Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) in Catalunya. After earning my bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), I completed a Master’s in Biodiversity at the University of Barcelona (UB), where I studied the movement ecology of wild brown bears in the Catalan Pyrenees using GPS data.

As a wildlife photographer and ornithologist since my early teens, I have always been fascinated by bird behaviour. This passion led me to pursue a PhD in Behavioural Ecology, focusing on individual differences in behaviour and their consequences for fitness. Since the start of my PhD, I have been developing new technological approaches to monitor and track animal behaviour in an automated way. By combining open electronics with computer vision techniques, I aim to minimise human disturbance while significantly increasing the detail and accuracy of behavioural data collection.

Currently, I am studying the role of parental behaviour in the reproductive success of wild jackdaws (Corvus monedula), co-supervised by Dr Jolle Jolles and Dr Daniel Sol. In parallel with my PhD, I have been conducting fieldwork for the Common Small Mammal Monitoring Scheme of Spain (SEMICE) in the BiBio research group at the Natural Sciences Museum of Granollers (MSCG), monitoring small mammal populations across Catalunya since 2019.

Beyond my research, I enjoy supervising students in fieldwork, helping them gain confidence in animal handling and field techniques. Sharing my experience with them feels like giving back the support and guidance I once received from other students at the start of my career. I am also passionate about science communication and enjoy sharing my research. I have presented our work at international conferences such as Behaviour 2023 and the European Conference of Behavioural Biology (ECBB) in 2024, and I have given talks at external research institutes such as the Centre for Advanced Studies in Blanes (CEAB-CSIC), the MSCG and the University of Exeter.
